Maths

At Calton we aim for all children to develop a ‘can do’ attitude towards Maths leading them to become confident mathematicians who achieve their potential and more. We aim to promote enjoyment, enthusiasm and motivation for learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion. Mathematics teaches us to make sense of the world around us through developing a child’s ability to calculate, to communicate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives. Through their growing knowledge and understanding, children learn to appreciate that mathematics can be an exciting and stimulating subject to learn which has relevance to their own everyday lives.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT MY CHILD IN MATHS?
Practice Inter Rail targets with your child, use resources such as counters and dice to help

There are free maths online resources which the children can utilise to practise their Inter Rail targets and refine their skills;

  1. Third Space Learning Maths Hub (resources from maths tuition experts)
  2. BBC Bitesize – KS1 and KS2 Maths (everything)
  3. Hit the Button (times tables and number bonds)
  4. Math is Fun (worksheets)
  5. Primary Resources
  6. NRich (problem solving and challenge questions)
  7. Maths Zone (portal to lots of maths games and quizzes)

  • Point out the maths in everyday life.
  • Include your child in activities involving numbers and measuring, such as shopping, cooking and travelling.
  • Be positive about maths. Try not to say things like "I can't do maths" or "I hated maths at school" – your child may start to think like that themselves.
  • Play dice games
  • Contact school if you would like to sign up to Doodle Maths – there is a small cost associated with this
