Knockout Cup Winners!

24th March 2017

Wow what a game, Mr Coughlin had no finger nails left! What an outstanding performance.

We were quite relaxed on the minibus travelling to the ground, the girls were singing lots of songs – mostly involving pizza! We hadn’t played Harewood this season, so were unsure what to expect, but what we did know was if we played to our strengths and continued to communicate, defend and use the space, then we had an excellent chance.

After a warm up, team photos and final instructions Calton were ready to go. Cheered on by our families and teachers, it was a very quiet opening with the ball staying around the middle of the pitch. Suddenly the game came into life as both teams started to attack. Harewood were looking to use their pacey striker, whereas Calton looked to exploit the space on the wings and attack when possible with speed. Harewood had the first real chance, but their striker was stopped with great positioning and awareness from Jasmine.

There were a few chances throughout the first half, but Calton soon took the lead as Sienna’s low shot hit the post and was deflected in. As Calton looked to add to the score, Harewood attacked and what seemed like a fair challenge from Emma resulted in a free kick awarded by the referee. This led to the equaliser as Harewood scored a screamer in the top corner from this freekick, giving Maddy no chance.

With the score being 1-1 at half time, Calton were very much in this game and were the better team as they created more chances. These chances were coming more often as the girls used the space and got in behind the defence regularly. Emma’s quick throw ins were catching Harewood off guard regularly and Jasmine was strong in defence – keeping their striker quiet and battling hard. Sienna and Portia went on runs and created more chances and Calton hit the post twice before Portia managed to hit the ball over line and give us the lead.

There were now seven minutes to keep things tight in defence, Calton were able to relieve pressure through Emma, Portia and Sienna going on runs and still creating chances, we also had Jasmine leading the line and defending like a lion in defence, clearing up everything. Calton kept Harewood at bay and fully deserved to win and lift the trophy, every player was outstanding today and did themselves and the school proud.
