Gloucester Future Apprenticeship programme

24th March 2017

As part of the Gloucester Future Apprenticeship programme Calton has joined with Gloucester Engineering Training Centre to inspire young people and improve their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills. Some Year 5 pupils were chosen to visit the training site in Barnwood on Friday 24th March 2017. A write up and photos were published in The Citizen newspaper, summary below:

Schools and businesses are now beginning to link-up as part of this year’s Future Apprentice campaign – and the partnerships are already having a positive impact.

Pupils from Calton Primary School took a trip to one of the sponsors and partner firms in this year’s campaign and the results generated a wave of enthusiasm with children keen for their next meeting.

A small group of pupils, together with teachers Mrs Brown and Mrs Day-Webb, visited Gloucestershire Engineering Training (GET) at Barnwood Point, Corinium Avenue.

“By the time we came back all six of the children really wanted to be engineers. GET really put on a show. There was a 3-D printer at work which they thought was just amazing,” said Mrs Brown. “There was a tower they switched on which you could put a rod up against which created an arc of electricity. GET is coming to us next time and hopefully bringing some more of its toys along and we will be involving more children, but probably staying with Year 5.”

She added: “It has certainly made an impression on them – and they are really enjoying it. Some of the children won’t necessarily go to university so this is a great way of showing them the other routes to work.”
